Spirit Helper
Carved from a single section
of a black walnut tree grown in South Dakota,
this sculpture features a Lakota
woman and a red tailed hawk.
It was inspired by the memory of Pete Catches,
an Oglala Holy Man,
whose “Spirit Helper” was known
to be a red-tailed hawk.
Copper wire and solder were used for the hawk’s feet.
Granite for the base
is also a product of South Dakota.
